It is actually astonishing how much we as humans depend on water for our survival. A number of items involving the cleansing of water featured on the website were quite intriguing yet it was the LifeStraw that really caught my eye. I was greatly interested in how a personal mobile water purification tool can quickly and effectively clean water and eliminate the chances of contracting diseases such as typhoid, cholera, dysentery and diarrhea. Upon conducting more research, I found that it’s a 25cm long plastic tube that costs only about $2.00 US. The LifeStraw has a life span of approximately 700 liters – which equals to about a year’s supply of purified water for one individual. This simple tube can essentially save millions of lives every year! What’s great is that no use of electricity is needed which is convenient for a number of third world countries where electricity is sparse. Only force is needed which can be provided by the sucking performed by the individual. Essentially, you use the LifeStraw like a straw, sucking the clean water out from its source – whether it is a lake or a puddle of water. The idea is brilliant and very affordable!

Other aspects may be tackled once the issues involving health are dealt with first. The number one cause of people dying in third world countries is not because they are not receiving an education, but because they are unhealthy and suffer from various diseases. I believe these many of these diseases can be prevented if a proper health care system was implemented.
